George Luna: Being part of something big

Golden Gate Fields is Home for Retired Jockey George Luna. It wasn’t his goal to be a jockey, in fact George Luna wanted to be a landscape architect, but people kept telling him “Hey, you’re small enough to be a jockey,” and eventually he became one.

His days are full. He’s at Golden Gate Fields at four every morning, seven days a week, training and exercising horses. He says, “Riding’s dangerous, a bit like going to war. I’ve broken more bones than I care to think about, but it makes life more precious; you pay more attention.”

Ishmael Reed: Finding a lifetime of activity at the Y

At the age of six or seven internationally known author Ishmael Reed became a member of the Michigan Avenue YMCA in Buffalo, New York. His parents both worked during the day and the YMCA provided day-care for low income parents.

He has vivid memories of the myriad of indoor and outdoor creative, educational and fun activities the YMCA daily provided for the children.

In 1955 when he was a high school junior, he was presented with the opportunity to travel outside of the U.S. when the Y staff raised the money to send a group of teens to Europe for three weeks. “It changed my life,” says Ishmael.

Cardio & Dance at the Y incorporate footwork and body movements from a wide variety of dances including hip-hop, Latin and Zumba. Classes incorporate a wide variety of medium- and low-impact aerobic dance moves to a variety of high-energy beats.

The Y offers strength & conditioning classes for all ages, all levels and all interests. We focus on strengthening and toning the muscles of the entire body. Weights, bands, and tubing are utilized for a balanced and diversified workout routine.

Seniors

Living healthy is about spirit, mind and body at every age and stage. The Y offers classes and programs for seniors who are interested in strength training & aerobics.

Personal Training

We all need the advice of an expert sometimes, as well as the personal attention that comes with a trainer or coach. The Y offers personal training and coaching to help you set and meet your specific goals in order to live healthier.

Healthy Heart

Healthy Heart at the Y is a safe, medically supervised exercise program specifically designed for people with a history of heart disease, hypertension or diabetes.
