Program Information and Application Details


The Y-Scholars Program of the YMCA-PG&E Teen Center is a college-

outreach program at Berkeley High School.  Our purpose is to increase

students' access to higher education by promoting a work hard and

achieve attitude. The program aims to reach out to Berkeley High School

students who are the first in their family to be college-bound.  There is

no minimum GPA requirement to join the program, though we look for

students who are persistent and committed.


The Y-Scholars Program is free to all participants and offers:

1. College/Career Workshops Weekly group meetings cover various topics including study and communication skills, career exploration, scholarship searches, financial aid, and the college application process.

2. Individual College Advising Program Counselors provide 1-on-1 mentoring for 12th grade students applying to post-secondary schools.

3. After-School Tutoring
Tutorial sessions are provided everyday in the Berkeley High School library after school.



4. Volunteer Mentors Local college students, YMCA patrons, and other community members offer 1-on-1 academic and social support for participants in the program.

5. Enrichment Programs Students participate in free or low-cost SAT preparation classes, summer programs, and concurrent enrollment at local community colleges.

6. College Tours
Students explore several Bay Area campuses such as San Francisco State University, UC Davis, and Stanford University.





7. Extra-Curricular Activities Students can participate in a variety of social, recreational, vocational, and leadership opportunities within the program and the surrounding communities.
8. Scholarship Opportunities Students receive assistance in applying to many local and national scholarship organizations.
9. YMCA Membership Participants in the program receive a membership to the new YMCA-PG&E Teen Center.
